Welcome to this Information and Library Services Tutorial on Searching for Federal Cases by Keyword or Party Name using Lexis-Nexis Academic. This tutorial will take a little over one minute.

First we will search for Federal Cases by Keyword. To do this, click on US Legal.

Next, choose the Federal & State Cases option.

Enter your search terms into the “Search For” box. Using quotation marks around search terms tells the database to search for that exact phrase. Then go down to the “Jurisdiction” option and click on the drop down menu.

Scroll down and select “All Federal Courts”.

We are going to do the default search for “Everywhere” in the citation. However, you can search by “Citation”, “Party Names”, “Legal Topics”, “Judges”, “Attorney”, or you can search for your terms that occur at least five times in the document.

On the left-hand side of the screen, you will see the number of results. You will also see that you can choose a source by category. Towards the center of the screen, you will see that the results are ordered by relevance. You can also sort by publication date.

Next, we will search for Federal cases by Party Name. In the center box, “Look up a Legal Case”, under “Or by Parties”, enter the names of the parties that you wish to search for. Then, click the “Go” button.

On this screen, you can review the results of your search.

You can also search for cases by party name by clicking on US Legal on the left-hand side of the page.

Next, choose the Federal and State cases option.

In the first search box, enter a party name.

Next, choose “Party Name” from the drop down list.

In the second search box, enter another party name

And choose “Party Names” from the drop down list.

Then, click the search button.

This will also take you to the list of results. These results will be the same as the ones you received when using the quick search box to search.
