Ever wonder what the UMUC Library does to support students and faculty? This Infographic, created by Reference and Instruction Librarian Ryan Shepard in collaboration with UMUC's Marketing Department, and recently updated, provides a quick snapshot of Library statistics, from the thousands of reference questions answered annually to the millions of books available through the University of Maryland Library System. Take a look - and don't forget to Ask a Librarian for all your research needs!
The UMUC Library's OneSearch on the library homepage (http://www.umuc.edu/library) now defaults to full-text searching. This allows students to more quickly and easily locate relevant articles and other library resources without the inconvenience of also retrieving citation-only records.
Students who need the more comprehensive search can still uncheck the full-text only checkbox, and also access the individual research databases directly via the Databases by Title (A-Z) link. Articles not available in full text can still be requested through DocumentExpress.
In addition, we've also made improvements to the functionality and scope of OneSearch, including the addition of six open access indexes that provide access to over 96 million full-text articles and other documents. The UMUC Library is pleased to introduce the brand-new Faculty Teaching and Learning Collection! This collection contains curated resources for UMUC teaching faculty, including links to articles, e-books, databases, and websites to assist faculty in teaching and professional development. Included are sections on Open Educational Resources, Distance Education resources, and getting published, plus bibliographies on hot topics in teaching and learning. Also included is a newsfeed for The Chronicle of Higher Education as well as videos addressing the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning. Please take a look at this new collection and let us know what you think!
UMUC Librarians and staff are always brainstorming new ways to make accessing and using our research resources easier for students, faculty, and staff. To that end, we have created a new Library FAQ page. This page, easily accessed on our Ask a Librarian page, contains answers to those questions our users most frequently ask about UMUC Library resources and services. The page contains information about library databases, eReadings, library liaisons, plagiarism tutorials, citations, company research, DocumentExpress, and much more. Users can either click on a link to a topic of interest or conduct a keyword search for a particular topic in the search box at the top of the page. Of course, users can still continue to contact librarians via email, instant messaging, and telephone during regularly-scheduled hours. Suggestions for new questions are always welcome!
The UMUC Archives collects, arranges, describes, preserves, and makes accessible the history of the University of Maryland University College. The Archives houses everything from UMUC marketing materials to photos of the Pope meeting UMUC students. Every day we process more donations and unearth more wonderful information about UMUC’s glorious past - but we can’t do it without you! We need everything from papers, to pictures, to memorabilia - if you think you might have something you’d like to donate, please contact Renee Brown. Let's make history...together!
The UMUC Library recently made available three new health management and nursing databases with extensive full text included:
- Health Business Elite includes resources on healthcare administration and other non-clinical aspects of healthcare institution management.
- Health Management Database includes health management content on hospitals, insurance, law, statistics, business management, personnel management, ethics, health economics, and public health administration.
- Nursing Reference Center includes evidence-based information for point of care, continuing education, and nursing research.
Welcome to the Newest Member of the UMUC Library Reference Team!
The UMUC Library welcomes new Library Associate for Reference, ChristineMoua. Christine received her Master's of Library Science in August 2016 from Simmons College. She has a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in Political Science from King's College. Christine was previously an intern for The Department of the Navy, National Geographic, and Bain and Company. She will provide reference and instructional services, as well as serve as liaison to the Education department.

- Cynthia Thomes and Ed O'Donnell, Reference and Instruction Librarians, conducted a Targeted Webinar for Faculty Development entitled "Utilizing Library Resources for Business Faculty." The well-received webinar contained information on accessing and using business-related library resources and databases, including ABI/INFORM, Business Insights: Essentials, Business Source Complete, Factiva, Hoover's, Mergent Online, and several others. The Librarians included examples of specialized features of the databases that faculty may not have been aware of, such as the Comparison Chart feature in Business Insights: Essentials. This feature allows users to create comparison charts of two or more companies or industries, offering a striking visual aid for business research. Also pointed out were the Library's Business Research Guides and Business Research Web Pages (September 2016).

- Renee Brown provided a tour of the Archives for Marie Cini, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs. She also provided a tour for Maj. Gen. Lloyd "Milo" Miles (U.S. Army, Ret.), Senior Vice President for Global Military Operations at UMUC.
The UMUC Library provides library liaison services to UMUC faculty. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with faculty to provide tailored library services for individual classes, whether it be visiting your online or face-to-face class, assisting in adding information literacy components to specific course assignments or projects, or providing handouts or online resources customized to your discipline or current course topic. Library liaisons have been actively involved in The Undergraduate School's e-resource project by providing assistance in locating open access e-resources. Please keep the liaison librarians in mind when you have library related questions, need extra help with research, or need instruction on how to use our resources.
