On behalf of my colleagues at the UMUC Library, I extend warm wishes to all new and returning students, faculty, and staff for a productive fall semester!
As the new TUS e-resources initiative gets underway, the Library is here to offer full support to Academic Directors and faculty. Library liaisons are ready to meet with Academic Directors and faculty to help make for a smooth transition to all-electronic classroom materials. In addition, the Library has implemented a new practice for e-book chapters. Please continue reading the newsletter for more information.

The Library is active in maintaining the University Archives, and has recently added the speeches of one of our former European Directors to the collection. More information is available below. And as always, we continue to represent UMUC in conferences.
UMUC librarians are available for research assistance through a variety of formats, including 24/7 e-mail and live chat, as well as instant messaging and via telephone during regularly-scheduled hours. Individual research consultations are available in-person, by phone, or via Web Conferencing. See Ask a Librarian for more information and to schedule an appointment.
Faculty: be sure to take full advantage of the Library's liaison program and course-related library instruction. Please familiarize yourselves with these services. We are here to help your students succeed!

Starting in fall 2013, with full implementation in spring 2014, Academic/Program Directors will be expected to coordinate electronic reserves readings to be placed in the classroom. Individual faculty can still supplement these readings with approval of his/her director. More detailed information regarding this change has been sent out through TUS/TGS.
UMUC Library is implementing a new practice that allows, subject to Academic/Program Director approval, up to 10% or one chapter of a book or other published work that has been or will be lawfully acquired or purchased by UMUC and that otherwise qualifies as fair use under 17 U.S.C. § 107 to be placed on E-Reserves. Requests that are above this limit or that do not comply with fair use will follow the normal procedures for copyright clearance. Beginning with the Fall 2013 semester, you will see additional language added to the request form for book chapters to certify compliance with fair use criteria.
In support of the e-Resources project, the UMUC Library created an E-Reserves Basic Guidelines document that was shared with Academic Directors to help them better understand what materials can be requested and some basic guidance on copyright pricing. You can also review the E-Reserves FAQ for additional information regarding E-Reserves.
The UMUC Library has purchased a new E-Reserves system, Ares from Atlas Systems, Inc., which allows for full integration with LEO. Implementation is in progress, with the expectation that the new system will be live in spring 2014. When fully implemented, Ares will allow directors to easily request items and mark them to be placed in all appropriate course sections. Items can be imported from previous courses, as well as entering new requests. The status of the items can also be tracked as they are processed by the library.
Many IT and desktop videos are now available in our Books24x7 e-books collection! You can search for them in the search box located at the top of the My Home page. You can also access them by going to the Browse Topics box on the My Home page, selecting either Desktop or IT videos from the dropdown menu, and then choosing a topic area within each to see the videos.
E-resources in the EBSCOhost interface have been enhanced, for instance, in Academic Search Complete. There have been improvements to the overall look of the Search, Search Results, and Detailed Record. Moreover, the feature previously labeled Alert/Save/Share is now labeled Share. All of the existing functionality of this feature remains the same.
- LexisNexis Academic
Delivery to Dropbox enhancement has now been expanded to include document delivery to Google Drive. Click on the cloud delivery icon and select either Dropbox or Google Drive on the pop-up screen. Also, LexisNexis Academic now includes Google Translate functionality. You will now see a drop-down box in results list and document view that will allow you to translate your results and documents into over 70 languages.

The UMUC Library recently began using Google Analytics to take a closer look at how our patrons are using Library web pages. Google Analytics provides real-time and cumulative, anonymized data about how visitors move through the Library's Web site, what links are clicked on, how much is spent on particular pages, what search terms are used, what devices are used to access the site, and other factors. It will help insure that user preferences and behavior are taken into account when changes are made to the design of Library pages.
The Library's Web Analytics Working Group is currently conducting a trial to measure and understand behavior on several high-traffic pages, with the goal of moving toward broader incorporation of analytics into Library design decision-making.
The University Archives has received a collection of speeches by Mason “Bob” G. Daly given during his tenure as Director of the European Division of UMUC. Mr. Daly was head of the European Division for most of the 1960s, and his speeches reflect the momentous changes that transpired during this era. The range of this collection is diverse. His conference speeches evince a drive to fill the military with educated and responsible soldiers, while other, less formal, speeches portray an affable and approachable nature.
The highlight of the collection is his commencement speeches. With their call to continue pursuing education, to keep asking questions, and to be proud citizens of the world, the speeches continue to inspire even today, nearly 50 years after they were first given.

Presentations and Publications
- ERM (Electronic Resources Management) and the Extended Mind
Lenore England, Assistant Director for Electronic Resources Management, and Stephen Miller, Associate Vice Provost, will present at the Charleston Conference in November 2013. The presentation will discuss a philosophical approach to understanding how students use electronic resources in their coursework in order to help them get what they need when they need it.
- ENGAGE Your ERM (Electronic Resources Management): Using JIVE for Social Networking
Lenore England, Assistant Director for Electronic Resources Management, and Jennifer Diffin, Assistant Director, Systems and Access Services, will present at the Charleston Conference in November 2013. The presentation will discuss how ENGAGE offers a promising possibility as an effective communication tool for managing electronic resources within the UMUC community.
- The Association for Library Collection and Technical Services (ALCTS) will publish an article in the September edition of the ALCTS Newsletter Online (ANO) about Lenore England, Assistant Director for Electronic Resources Management, and her work on fundraising for ALCTS.
The UMUC Library provides library liaison services to UMUC faculty. We welcome the opportunity to work closely with faculty to provide tailored library services to individual classes, whether it be visiting your online or face-to-face class, assisting in adding information literacy components to specific course assignments or projects, or providing handouts or online resources customized to your discipline or current course topic. Please keep the liaison librarians in mind when you have library related questions, need extra help with research, or need instruction on how to use our resources.

MERLOT is a free and open online community of resources designed primarily for faculty, staff, and students of higher education from around the world to share their learning materials and pedagogy.
- OER Commons
OER Commons uses a variety of categories to organize resources. The categories are assigned by the resources' creators and the OER Commons administrators, and they describe various aspects of the items, including grade level, subject area, and material format.
